If you decide to study abroad, you may encounter what is known as culture shock. What does it mean? Culture shock is the confusion or discomfort you might feel when visiting a country with customs and traditions different from what you are used to. Each of us experiences culture shock in our own way. It depends not only on our personality but also on the country we visit. Past experiences can also shape how we handle it. So, how can you overcome it?

  • Learn about your host country before arriving

The best thing you can do is research your host country. Read travel blogs or guidebooks, explore social media, and learn all the important details before you arrive. Also, make sure to familiarize yourself with local customs and social norms.

  • Set goals for learning during your stay

Do not underestimate the importance of setting learning goals for your time abroad. People are always learning, so focus on something you enjoy. Do you like cooking? Great, let’s learn how
to prepare a popular local dish! And don’t forget to learn the local language—it can help you connect with locals even more.

  • Keep a list of things you love

When you first arrive, write down everything you love about your host country. Later, during more challenging times, revisit that list to remind yourself of the positives, not just the frustrations. This simple habit can help you stay focused on the good aspects of your experience, even when you feel overwhelmed. Keeping a list also serves as a great way to track your personal growth and how your perspective evolves over time.

  • Talk to others about your feelings

If you are not part of a group, it can be helpful to connect with other people living abroad. Sharing how you are adjusting and discussing your experiences can offer you support and new perspectives. They might have already navigated challenges you’re facing, whether it is understanding local customs or overcoming language barriers. These conversations can can remind you that you
are not alone.

  • Engage with the local community

Feeling like an outsider can intensify culture shock, so it is important to get involved in local activities. Attend community events, volunteer for local organizations or join clubs that match your interests. Engaging with the community not only enriches your experience but also helps transform your temporary stay into something more meaningful and fulfilling.

  • Find healthy distractions during challenging times

When you encounter difficult moments, it is important to seek out healthy distractions. Consider watching a favorite show, preparing a meal from home, or something that makes you happy.
It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed at times, but be mindful not to let your breaks turn into isolation. Engaging in enjoyable activities can provide relief and remind you of the things you love, making it easier to navigate the ups and downs of your experience abroad.

  • Let go expectations and try to see things from your host culture’s perspective

One of the most common mistakes people make when traveling abroad is assuming that everything will be the same as at home. This mindset can lead to frustration and disappointment. Instead, approach your new environment with an open mind and try not to impose your own expectations.

As you navigate the stages of culture shock, make an effort to understand your host culture’s point of view. You do not have to agree with everything, but taking the time to see where they are coming from can enrich your experience. Ask questions and engage in conversations with locals; this will help you gain deeper insights into their customs and beliefs.
