There is something special about the beginning of a new semester at Tomas Bata University. Within just a few days, the university becomes noticeably more international as students arrive in Zlín from partner universities all over Europe and beyond.
For many of them, it is their first time living in the Czech Republic. For some, it is even their first experience staying abroad for an extended period. And while there are plenty of practical matters to take care of upon arrival, an exchange study stay should be about more than just registrations, paperwork, and finding the right classroom. To ensure their transition into this new chapter of life is as smooth as possible, the UTB International Office and the student organization ESN Zlín prepared a rich official and informal welcome program.
The official part kicked off on 14 September 2026, with the traditional Welcome Meeting hosted by the UTB International Office, bringing together students from dozens of countries in one room for the first time. Representatives from UTB Halls of Residence and Refectories provided newcomers with practical tips on accommodation and dormitory life, while the International Office presented essential information regarding studies, public transport, and everyday life in Zlín. An important element was also a presentation dedicated to culture shock and the psychological aspects of adapting to a new environment, helping students navigate the initial uncertainty of transitioning to a different culture.
Building seamlessly on the official orientation, ESN Zlín organized an action-packed Welcome Week designed to help students discover the city and form new friendships. Right at the start, team spirit was tested during the competitive Tour de Zlín, where students completed tasks at key landmarks around the city, while the evening Speed Friending helped break the ice with a fun bingo quiz. During Welcome Night, students wrote letters to their future selves and celebrated international diversity at the Flag Party in Sklep 33 club.
The informal atmosphere continued with a relaxing afternoon at Chill in the Park, a Tour de Pub challenge, and a cozy movie night. The entire week then culminated in a full-day trip to Olomouc in collaboration with ESN UP Olomouc, where students explored the historic city center, visited local museums, and connected with other international students. Together, the official Welcome Meeting and ESN Zlín’s diverse program offered an ideal start to the new semester, creating an environment for friendships that will last a lifetime. We wish all our new students a warm welcome and hope they feel right at home at UTB and in Zlín.
